Local Conditions

If you're coming to Tofino you'll like want to know three things:

  1. How's the weather?
  2. How are the roads?
  3. How's the surf?

Please be sure to remember three things when coming to Tofino: drive safe, surf with caution, and it's not rain that falls, it's liquid sunshine!

Surf and Swells

Whether an expert or a novice, please pay attention to the Wave Hazard Signs on the way into town. The surf can be as dangerous as the road on the way here (or its drivers). Mother nature is not as forgiving as we might hope.

Kite Surfing at Cox BayKite surfing at Cox Bay

Longbeach, Cox Bay, and Chestermans beaches are the closest to town. With more than one to choose from, check out where the break is best. You can't really appreciate the conditions while looking at a computer screen.

At any rate, we usually check our MagicSeaweed.com or Surfline.com to see what the buoys have to say.

Weather

Is it raining in Tofino? Will it be raining in Tofino. How much is it going to rain in Tofino? Contrary to popular belief, rain isn't all that happens here.

Tofino sits in the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest remaining coastal temperate rainforests in the world. The diversity within this rare ecosystem depends on our temperate climate. With the vast Pacific Ocean on one side and mountains of rainforest on the other, one can't help but expect a bit of moisture and wind with the sunshine!

The weather forcasts on WeatherNetwork.com and Environment Canada are pretty accurate, most of the time, pretty close. . .

Roads

Tofino is more than just a tourist town on the west coast of Vancouver Island - it is a destination! Whether travelling by land, sea or air, once you're here, you'll find what you came for and why.

As beautiful a drive as the Pacific Rim Highway is, it can be somewhat overwhelming. Heavy traffic and road construction in the summer; dauntIing weather conditions or even road closures during the winter months.

Despite what you may have heard about the drive to get here - or read - the scenery itself makes the road trip worthwhile. Just be sure to pull over first to see the sights if you're behind the wheel! Highway 4 is just as safe as its drivers.

DriveBC has excellent and regularily updated road reports, and maps.google.com has great maps to help you get here.
